Paper weight

We use "gsm" to describe the weight of paper. GSM (grams per square meter) serves as the universal metric measure for paper weight and can be converted into pounds (lbs) for those who prefer this alternative unit of measurement.

LBS to GSM formula:

1lb. of Text paper = 1.48 gsm. Multiply each pound of text paper by 1.48 (e.g. 100lb. text = 148 gsm)

1lb. of Cover paper = 2.708 gsm. Multiply each pound of cover paper by 2.708 (e.g. 100lb. cover = 270.8 gsm)
Common paper weight in China printing industry
The common-used paper weight in China printing market is slightly different from the US, European or some other countries.

For glossy & matte art paper/card, the weight can normally be selected from 80 gsm, 105 gsm, 115 gsm, 128 gsm, 157 gsm, 190 gsm, 200 gsm, 210 gsm, 230 gsm, 250 gsm, 300 gsm and 350 gsm.

In terms of uncoated paper, we have the options of 60 gsm, 70 gsm, 80 gsm, 100 gsm, 120 gsm, 140 gsm, 160 gsm, 180 gsm, 200 gsm, 250 gsm, 300 gsm and 350 gsm.

Regarding to specialty paper, choices could be various but they are basically ranging from 100 to 400 gsm.

Let’s review again the LBS to GSM formula. If a book used a 100lb. glossy art cover and 100lb. glossy art text, it would mean 300 gsm glossy art cover and 157 gsm glossy art text to us.
Measurement
Thickness
Typically, the higher the gsm, the thicker the paper. However, with different types of paper, thickness can be different. For example, the thickness of 105 gsm gloss art paper is 0.085mm, while 80 gsm woodfree paper is measured at 0.1mm thick.

Sometimes if you have a sample on hand but not clear with the weight of the paper, you can use a thickness gauge to measure the paper and let us know the thickness and paper type. We will be able to find the paper to match yours.
